While many of us might spend more time thinking about our dream date than their perfect web-designer, the latter will probably have more of an impact on the professionalism and efficiency of your company’s web site. If you’re new to the game, you’re probably wondering what to look for.An easy (and obvious) first step is to visit the website designer’s site and imagine it as your own home page. Would it reflect well on your company, and more importantly, does it look like something you couldn’t do by yourself? Website designers should have intimate knowledge of the aspects of web design that elude laymen, such as Java applets.Another thing to look at is experience. If a firm doesn’t list their portfolio, pass them by no questions asked. A reputable company should have at least 15 to 20 sites in their repertoire, with links to each one. It’s important to see if the designer can adapt themselves to different businesses or if they impose their own vision on each oneit’s important to have a style, but it’s also important that your site reflects you, and not your designer.Pricing, of course, can make or break a relationship. You should always have a number of companies from which to choose. Get quotes from each one, and while you’re at it, envision how open the company will be if you decide to go with them. Companies with real personal contact by phone or e-mail are better than companies where the members hide behind pseudonyms. After all, honesty is the most important part of any relationship.
